Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

You Figure It Out…

Last night, Logan, Elliot, and I went to a new resident welcome party at Barley’s. The first year resident who is 33 weeks pregnant was there with her husband. We were talking about solid food and she asked, “When do you start them on solids?” I replied that we started him a little early than the recommended 4 months since he was grabbing at the food on the table. She asked, “How do you learn all of this stuff? We don’t know anything (about taking care of a baby)…” I replied, “You just sort of figure it out…” Later I realized what a stupid unhelpful answer that was. So, here in gory detail is how we “figured (and are still figuring) it out”…

1. Reading – I read the Mayo pregnancy book throughout my pregnancy. In January I borrowed an attachment parenting philosophy book from the library, read it, and liked it some of the ideas from it (the room sharing and baby slings particularly). I will say that the book gave me a false expectation in my ability to keep the baby from crying, which was very frustrating. My dad also referred me to a podcast on parenting from the author of the book Selfish Reasons to Have More Kids, which was nice in that it kind of made the task of raising a child seem overall manageable and enjoyable with the right attitude. Now I refer to Baby 411 for parenting topics and read What to Expect as a month by month guide. The 411 guide was super helpful when we were having trouble with breast feeding at the end of the first week. It turns out I was “engorged” which of course was something I had never heard of at the time. Reading is useful, but it can also make you feel overwhelmed.

2. Googling – Nothing beats google for speed and amount of information, but all advice must be taken with a grain of salt. For example, when Elliot was so fussy, I googled “Baby choking during feeding” and I got a lot of hits for breast milk overproduction. Turns out, Elliot was having reflux, so I got sent down the wrong path. Also, most people on the internet are as clueless as you are, so make sure you are at a reputable reference site.

3. Friends and family with kids – Elliot was fussing and drooling and Gam Gam said, “Is he teething?” How should we know? People who have been through having children are often fantastic resources for things to try. But different things work for different kids. For example, my obstetrician (and literally everyone) highly recommended swaddling, which Elliot hated.

4. Pediatrician – Everytime we go to the doctor, I bring my list of questions. He figured out the GERD thing so he is my hero. But his suggestion for Elliot not taking the bottle was to try a sippy cup which never really worked for us.

5. Classes – We left the childbirth classes early. I think they gave me a false notion of how achievable and desirable it is to have “natural birth” (which is a whole post in itself). I think the infant safety and CPR class was the only really helpful class that we went to.

6. Lactation Consultants – We bothered these ladies as much as possible while we were in the hospital. They were great! The nurses would give us conflicting and sometimes inaccurate advice on how to get a latch and keep him feeding. The lactation consultants knew the facts and were able to set us straight on how to breastfeed.

7. Getting to know your baby – Every baby is a little bit different and taking the time to learn his or her patterns and preferences is truly the key. So, I guess in that respect you really do have to just “figure it out.”

In other news, this has been a super busy week for me. I got home on Tuesday at midnight, 9 on Wednesday and Thursday, and went in last night at 1:30AM for a trauma procedure. I’ve gotten a lot of great experience but it has been hard on the family. We are spending a lot of time together this weekend to make up for it. Tom hung our hammocks that Linzy got for us so we relaxed in them on Saturday afternoon.

A Cowboy Needs a Horse

My parents came up this weekend and Logan and Grandpa went to Cincinnati for a Bengals game against the Jets. The Bengals won and my dad got to experience Logan’s Ohio relatives including the infamous “Pappy van”. They had a good time.

My mom stayed with Elliot on Friday while I was at work. Tom got off early and the three of them went to Walmart to shop and entertain Elliot. Elliot has been highly entertained recently by his Fisherprice Jumperoo horse.

When I got home from work we went to Naples to eat. Elliot sat in his Bumbo on the table and ate rice cereal, which was highly entertaining to the rest of the restaurant. Then he tried and tried to get Tom’s Spaghetti Carbonara.

That night, Elliot and I slept by ourselves for the first time without daddy. I put pillows all around the edges of the bed and we slept together like a momma and baby bird snuggled in a nest.

The next day we got up and went to Tom’s winery for a tour. A lady working the wine bar tried to wow me with her son’s baby stats, but he was only 8 pounds something. Elliot and I were not impressed.

After that we went shopping at the Tanger Outlet’s. Mom remembered she wanted to get Logan a birthday gift and I found more that enough stuff for him at “The Kitchen Collection” and “Le Gourmet Chef.” We also got Elliot some clothes. We wanted to find him a onesie that said “My Uncle is Attractive and Single” since Tom was carrying him around in the Bjorn, but no such luck.

Logan and Grandpa came home in time for lunch. Logan opened his various gifts, which he enjoyed.

Mommy, daddy, and baby took a family nap that after noon. My parents left that evening after dinner at Nixon’s Deli. Logan, Elliot, and I went to the mall briefly to look around and then went home and went to bed.

Today we had a visit from the Collier’s. Victoria was moving into her new apartment for school. So she, her mom and dad, and Mathew stopped by to see the house and Elliot. Elliot was asleep but he happily woke up for company. He showed off his horse and some baby tricks for them. Afterwards, Logan, Elliot, and I went out shopping again. Elliot slept most of the time but awoke by the time we got to walmart for our groceries. He hit the hay pretty early tonight too. I guess we are all pretty tired.

1/3 of the way around the sun!

Baby Elliot is 4 months old today! It has been quite the busy month. He scoots himself, grabs toys, and eats cereal. We went to see Dr. Dave today and by the time the doctor got in the room, Elliot had shredded the paper on the examination table and was on all fours. The doctor was very impressed! Elliot weighed 16lb 15oz today.

We have hired Auntie Linzy to babysit Elliot 3 days a week so that daddy can go back to the office some. She stayed over Monday night. After I had put Elliot to sleep, Logan, Linzy, and I went to clean up dinner. I was washing dishes when I thought I heard Elliot cry out. So I stopped the water and listened. I didn’t heard him any more so Logan and I continued cleaning up. When we were done I went upstairs and there was Aunt Linzy rocking baby E back to sleep in the recliner. It was sweet!

Elliot got a fun new horse toy today from a lady that goes to the hair salon next to Logan’s office and a cowboy costume from Aunt Lisa. The cowboy shoes he already had from Gam Gam.

I’ve been trying to stick to a routine at night. I bathe him after he eats, we put him in a comfy onesie, and I read him a story. I added brushing his gums today since he is now 4 months old. I read him Mike Mulligan and he fell asleep by the end of it. I usually have to feed him again to get him to go to sleep, so I was impressed that he managed to fall asleep without some warm milk. My baby is getting older…

Birthday trip to the zoo!

Logan, Elliot, Gam Gam, and Linzy took a trip to the Knoxville Zoo for daddy’s birthday!

They look like they had lots of fun! Mommy got to go to the zoo too with daddy and baby during the weekend. Elliot really liked the piggies!

I also found this picture on Aunt Linzy’s phone and thought it was cute!

This one too 🙂

5 Generations!

Logan took Elliot to see his family on Friday for Linzy’s birthday while mommy was at work. Here are some videos I received.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3V-XJDP5pE

On Saturday, we got the five generation photo of Elliot, Logan, Gam Gam, Granny, and Grandma.
Will insert photo here!

Then we went on a picnic with Logan’s family.

Here’s Elliot with Cousins Alissa and Bryce.

Logan, Gam Gam, Aunt Linzy, Baby E, and I went on a walk after dinner. I carried Elliot in the Bjorn and as we crossed the top of a hill we heard a funny grunting sound. “A wild boar!” Logan exclaimed. “Good. I was afraid it was a bear.” I said, to which Gam Gam replied, “A boar is worse!” “Yeah, they are aggressive!” Logan stated as he scouted ahead. Meanwhile, Gam Gam and Auntie strategically positioned themselves between me (and Elliot) and the noise. It felt very tribal, like I was a momma with a papoose that we all had to help protect. We ended up turning back to play it safe.

Sunday, we took Elliot to the Ijam’s Nature Center.

Monday, Logan’s cousin Christian came over to visit. He is very good with Elliot, even though Elliot did scream at him when he woke up from his nap. Logan and Christian played with Logan’s War Hammer armies and Elliot and I relaxed in our comfy recliner. He fell asleep with me rocking him around 8 and by 9 I was asleep too. At 11 Logan woke me up and I put on my PJs and brushed my teeth and went back to sleep, cuddling Elliot in our bed. At 2 Elliot woke up… So that would be 6 hours right in a row of blissful sleep! YAY!

You knew I would make this at some point…

Some of my coworkers are having babies soon so I made them each an infant hat.

20120724-140348.jpg
I hope they have a sense of humor (and babies with heads smaller than “pumpkin head ” here…) The pattern I used can be found here. I used Lamb’s Pride bulky since I had a lot left over from making everyone in the family Jane hats. I might have to buy the pattern for larger sizes and make one for Elliot with an orange nipple!

And as for the battle on breastfeeding, I’d just like to say the one thing that every nursing mother is really thinking. “Yay! I get to run around in public with my top down and not get in trouble for indecent exposure! Take that Puritan based society values!”

Ha! Not really. I can’t say that I have actually just bared myself in public, but I have breastfeed draped in a restaurant a couple of times. It was either that or take the screaming baby home without me getting to eat. As frequently as babies eat and as disruptive as they can be it is nice to have the option of breastfeeding in public.

In other news, baby Elliot get bigger and more mobile every day. We have started using the size 3 diapers and have purchased a baby gate for the stairs. Yesterday when I got home from work Logan told me that Elliot had managed to launch himself forward while on all fours about a half a foot. He also tells me that on the hardwood floor at Gam Gam and Slappy’s house Elliot can really scoot!

20120724-145027.jpg

I am really looking forward to when we can start giving him solid food. I think he will really like it. I admit that I have snuck him a little dab of whipped cream and Logan has given him tastes of lemon and meat. We have rice cereal on hand. Now if we can only stand to wait until his 4 month birthday…

Elliot went on a picnic Sunday while mommy was at work. He reportedly slept most of the time.

Here he is resting in his pack and play.

Neither Teenage, Mutant, nor Ninja…

Look what daddy caught for baby E today!

I’m pretty sure he had no idea what to think!

Also, his favorite Gingy came to visit and bring mommy and daddy some beautiful furniture from Aunt Betty Lynn. We are so fortunate!

Elliot sat up in the booth at Gondolier (briefly) like a big boy!

Roll with it, baby

Now that baby Elliot has gotten pretty good at rolling back to front, he has discovered that he really likes sleeping on his stomach… Sunday night I checked on him at 1:30AM and, since I was awake anyways, flipped him over. He promptly kicked up his legs and flopped back over on his side for another 30 minutes until he was ready to eat. I can stop him from rolling all the way over when he sleeps in our bed, which makes him mad, but I guess there is not really anyway to stop him in his crib. I wish I could stop my anxiety over it. How much time has to pass before you stop checking on them to see if they are still breathing?
