Granddaddy’s Farm

Guest post from Gingy!

Elliot, Marm, and I decided, instead of watching football all day Saturday, we’d do something really fun. We went to Granddaddy’s Farm near Estill Springs, TN.
IMG_3553

First we took a hay ride.
IMG_3554IMG_3555
IMG_3556IMG_3557

We went through the woods and over to a pumpkin patch where we picked our favorite pumpkin, cut it from the vine and carried in back. We put it in a wagon and took it to the car so we could be free to do other fun stuff.
IMG_3559IMG_3565
IMG_3561IMG_3562
IMG_3563IMG_3564

There was a big playground with things to climb on and goats and mazes, etc.
IMG_3566IMG_3567
IMG_3568IMG_3572

Next we checked out 3 slides. The first slide was a pipe accessed by climbing giant tractor tires filled with sand.
IMG_3569IMG_3570
IMG_3571

The next slide was an even bigger pipe on the side of a hill. The third and longest slide was open and went down the side of a big hill. The fella at the top said it went real fast if you rode on a burlap bag, so we did that together and it sure was fast. We went off the slide at the end into the grass.
IMG_3574IMG_3575

The second time Elliot rode by himself.
IMG_3576IMG_3577

So that I could run down and meet him at the bottom, he rode without the burlap bag so he would go slower. He took off fast, but when the hill leveled out Elliot stopped. He tried his best to shimmy his way the rest of the way down the slide, but I ended up pulling him to the end.
http://youtu.be/75jrTQ4sZ3Y

After the slides we rode on a giant swing, ran through a hay maze, jumped on big inner tubes, and climbed through a string web.
IMG_3579IMG_3580
IMG_3581IMG_3583
IMG_3585IMG_3584

Last but not least, Elliot jumped in a big bin filled with corn.
http://youtu.be/wo-bwlPyR4g

It was a great day, but we didn’t get to do everything, so I’m hoping we get to go back soon!

Elliot’s trip to Kentucky

I got this email from Grandpa detailing their trip to Kentucky last week. He said I could post it here.

We did have a great trip this week and we have 50+ photos and 19 movies that prove it 🙂 .

Carol and I got away pretty early last Saturday (early for us anyway) and made it to Knoxville for an early lunch with Kate and Logan at Nixon’s Deli. We took Elliot with us and I think that he had at least as much fun as we did. He can handle a car ride pretty well and he kept busy honking his a toy steering wheel and watching movies.

Elliot did fall asleep on the ride up – right before we arrived at Fort Boonesborough. That might have been a good thing because he slept through something he might have found boring and it gave Carol and me time to take in some of the history and culture on display. We visited Williamsburg, VA a few years ago and this Fort Boonesborough visit kind of picked up the story from where it had ended there. I had never really put together the close connection between the Revolutionary War, the settlements west of the Appalachians, and even the establishment of Louisville. We also learned a little about hand-made textiles and blacksmithing.

IMG_1459IMG_1460
IMG_20140726_155730IMG_20140726_144658IMG_1464IMG_1462

We spent more time at Ft Boonesborough than I had anticipated, so we didn’t have much time to check out Lexington. We did find a house where Carol’s mom had lived and the church where her parents were married. We got a couple photos but that is about all.

IMG_1466

We made it to Frankfort in time to walk around the capitol – what a pretty building and what a nice town! The floral clock is surrounded by trees and we had a hard time finding it! We walked 3/4ths of the way around the capitol plaza and never saw it. We did find it without trouble from the street level when we drove around the building. We also found the overlook and took a couple photos there.

IMG_1470IMG_1473
IMG_1474
IMG_1480IMG_1478

We arrived in Louisville after dark and drove into a big storm. The lightning was impressive. I was glad to get the car into the parking garage with the existing threat of hail. We really enjoyed the Galt House and I’m glad that we chose to stay there. We had a view of the Belle of Louisville and the US 31 bridge from our window. It was still sprinkling rain on Sunday morning, which made it a good time to drive to the campus, Bardstown Road area, and some other places. We made a few photos at the campus. Turns out that you can get the Thinker and J.B. Speed Hall in the same photo!

IMG_20140727_084706IMG_20140727_090652
IMG_1487

By lunch time it had quit raining and we walked from the hotel to Broadway and ate Hot Browns at the Brown Hotel. We saw the Churchill Downs clock. Part of the clock was moving but the racetrack figures weren’t. I didn’t anticipate how big the clock would be and we walked right under it without noticing it the first time we went by. After lunch, we went to the Ky Theater and saw a 30 minute film (infomercial?) about Ky. I enjoyed the film and it made me proud to be from Ky.

We went over to Indiana in the afternoon to the Falls of the Ohio park. Again, Elliot slept through the boring, educational part – the visit to the Interpretive Center. And again the Virgina history came to the forefront as it was explained why Gen George Rogers Clark established Louisville. Also, the engineering history of building of the canal was interesting (I didn’t even know there was a canal until Sunday!). When we went back to the Galt House we could see the entrance to the canal and dam from the elevator lobby. Some day I’d like to see the lock if possible.

IMG_20140727_145900IMG_20140727_170125
DSC00067

We tried to go to the Big 4 bridge on Sunday afternoon, but we couldn’t get to River Road through the crowd going to Slugger Field and all the highway construction. I’m glad we didn’t make it then because the weather and timing was much better for that activity on Monday morning. We spent the whole morning between walking across the bridge and watching Elliot play at the playground on the Ky side. I think that the playground was his favorite part of the trip. He climbed ladders, slide down slides, and rode the merry-go-round. Carol and I were impressed with the good manners of the children. I took a bunch of movies there.

IMG_3481IMG_3484
IMG_20140728_142444IMG_20140728_142532

We didn’t get to do the Taste of Louisville tour (it was filled by the time we tried to book it) but other than that we did a pretty good job of visiting the town. I’m looking forward to going back. Carol had such a good time that she said she’d even be willing to go back for a basketball game. I’ll be checking the UofL schedule when it comes out and seeing what might be possible 🙂 .

The current chapter of the sleep saga

I’m back on night float with only 7.5 nights left for the rest of my residency! In preparation for night float this time around, Logan and I have been trying to ween Elliot from having me having to sleep with him to get him to go to sleep. Before, I had been lying with him for 30 minutes to an hour to get him to go to sleep, and longer if I fell asleep too. And honestly, it was fine. Yes, my measly adult time was cut short but I got to cuddle with my buddly with whom I already don’t get to spend enough time. And if I fell asleep, well I needed the sleep anyways.

It annoyed Logan, but the bigger problem came in the hours between 12AM and 4AM when Elliot would stir from his sleep cycle and realize that I wasn’t there anymore. He would head to our room and I would walk him back to his bed and lie down with him again. Some nights were worse than others, but a solid night’s sleep was a rare treat. One night I put him in our bed and after a moment he said, “Go to other bed?”

About a month ago, I got Jo Frost’s Supernanny: How to Get the Best From Your Children and read the sleep chapter. Logan makes fun of me for this since the chapter did not describe any techniques that I had not already heard from our doctor, but somehow having invested money in buying a book and reading the written word helped my resolve.

We started about a month ago. We did the bed time routine and put him to bed. I sat by his bed and plopped him back in bed every time he got out. I started reading my phone so that I would have a reason to be acting like I was ignoring him. Eventually he fell asleep. It was hard.

Over the next weeks, I sat further and further from his bed. Logan and I found that trying to put him to bed early (at 8PM) was not so productive, despite what Supernanny advised. I also found that instead of putting him immediately back in bed the first few times, I would let him pester me a little. “Oh, what reading?” “Mommy’s playing game!” I wouldn’t talk long with him, but I would explain what I was doing. I found that if I just put him straight back in bed he thought we were playing a game, which made it worse.

A couple of funny things: Shortly into the training, Elliot got out of bed a several times one night and as I was putting him in bed he grabbed my hand and would not let go! It was so sweet I could feel my resolve crumbling. Another night I was lying down by the door and Elliot got out of bed and brought me one of his night nights to cover up! In fact, one night I borrowed his favorite big Cars blankie and when he wasn’t going to sleep with his other blankies I gave it back. Then he brought it back to me to cover up! One night he got out of the bed and ran over and tackled me exclaiming, “Oh! Fell out of bed!” It was so funny I had to laugh, giggling, “Stop being so funny and go to sleep!”

The night that Logan’s Godmother passed away, Elliot and I heard him get the phone call while we were sleep training. We came out to check on him and we had a big family hug. Then we went back to sleep training. I thought Elliot was asleep a couple of times and when I went to check on him he was lying still with his eyes wide open and smiling at me. I did lie down with him that night. Life’s too short not to cuddle with your buddy every once in awhile!

I started night float this week, so Logan has been flying solo. They went on a trip to Ohio, where Elliot got a stomach bug. It’s been hard for them but Elliot now seems to be on the upswing. Gam Gam and Aunt Lisa have been helping too. I’m only sorry that I can’t really help. As far as the sleep training, Elliot seems to do even better with Logan. Logan can even get him to take a nap without having to lie with him and hold him down now. I think Elliot must be starting to realize the benefits of sleep. If he is tired, he seems more willing to lie down and try to sleep or at least relax. Now if only he could understand that mommy needs to sleep some during the day…
