Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

The Amazing Gingy!

I just have to show this off because it is amazing and so cute! The AAP advises against putting bumper pads in the crib, so look what Gingy did with ours! It’s a toy basket!

Gingy and Grandpa are here this weekend. Gingy is giving Elliot a bottle, which he did not want at first and eventually had a whole mouthful of milk without swallowing. Now he is a little hungrier and a little more cooperative. Elliot liked the Preakness earlier today and “I’ll Have Another” won again!

Slept Through the Night*!

*with only 3 interruptions for feeding and diapering yesterday night!

This is a significant improvement! The pediatrician was so pleased with our progress that he decided to suspended our weekly visits. Last week he told us something interesting. Apparently, babies are suppose to double their weight by six months. “Double!” I said. “That’s not fair! He started ahead!” Good grief. Thinking about lugging around a 19.5 lb six month old, not to mention all the breastfeeding to get to that point… I’m gonna be in great shape!

Speaking of size, he was 12lb 7oz at his last weight check. I guess we are making good progress towards his 6 month goal. He now wears size 2 diapers and fills out his 3-6 month clothes pretty well.

Day of Mommy Firsts

Today I drove for the first time since before Elliot was born. I also was out of ear shot from Elliot for the first since we have been home. I made a quick trip to work to get ready for a presentation next week. It was kind of a relief since I was tired because Elliot wanted to have a slumber party at 3AM last night. He and I played a lot this afternoon to make up for it.

I saw one of the new residents today while at work. She is 20 weeks pregnant and having a boy. I gave her some advise that I feel compelled to share here as well.
1. Get a growth ultrasound. You might have a nearly 10 pound baby and not realize it even though the super chipper volunteer worker teases you everyday by asking, “Is it twins?” … I should have been listening instead of being offended.
2. If you are planning on breastfeeding, then limit visitors at least to those who call ahead if not have no visitors. You will be practicing breastfeeding almost every hour and visitors make that really frustrating since you’ll already be interrupted by vitals signs, lab work, pain score checks, medication distribution, photographer, cleaning staff, etc. Do not be embarrassed to turn people away. The hospital is a terrible place to get any rest already.
3. Do not take the tags off of the newborn size clothing or open the newborn size diapers. I wish I had not been so eager to get everything ready. Could have saved some money by procrastinating… Go figure.
4. Diaper wipe warmer… Learned the importance of that one at the first late night diaper change.

Rethinking Things

I was given a link to a course to get your baby to sleep at night. The course sounds like, from what I can gather online without actually paying the $30 bucks, a “cry it out” method with a few other features, and while it may come to that, I’m not ready. Plus, Elliot is still only 5 weeks old. I forget that sometimes since he is big.

However, I did see something on swaddling that made me start trying it again. Elliot does this thing that Logan and I call his “Falling out of the Uterus” Dreams, where he’ll reach out his extremities while asleep and suddenly startle when they reach just a little bit farther than he was expecting. Apparently, one of the reasons to swaddle is to prevent babies from startling themselves awake when they have these dreams. The only thing is, once again, Elliot hates the swaddle… However, he seems alright with it if we put him in it when he is deep asleep. So we are trying that again.

I am also trying to get him to eat more during his night feedings. He usually eats from one breast and then goes back to sleep, and I am often lazy and will feed him piglet style and then go back to sleep myself. The only problem is that we seem to be waking up every hour and a half for more late night snacks. So, if I could just get him to fill up his tank a little more, maybe he would sleep longer. The only problem is that he is hard to wake up after he has finished one side. Plus, it seems stupid to wake the sleeping baby in order to get MORE sleep. So far this has been a bust (ha!), but hopefully it will get better. The GERD medicine seems to be helping at night at least, so he ought to be able to eat a bigger meal without getting too uncomfortable. And maybe he is still too little. Maybe in a few more weeks he will start sleeping a little longer on his own.

All of this is in preparation for the fast approaching W Day (Mommy goes back to work day). I am feeling some pressure as this needs to come together. I have to go back to work and I have to go soon so as not to get behind in my program. So far we have the bottle feeding taught and I am attempting to build up my frozen milk stores. Now if mommy could just get a better night’s sleep, she might be ready.

Happy Mother’s Day!

I got this…

Jealous much? 🙂

Logan got a pandora style charm bracelet for me on Elliot’s behalf. It’s sweet. It has gemstone beads for Elliot, Logan, and Me and a rocking horse bead (Elliot has a “Giant” rocking horse of the same name.) The plan is to add a bead for each major holiday or event for Elliot’s first year. I was worried I was going to get a giant booby, since that is Elliot’s favorite thing… That and fans…

I tried to dress Elliot for the occasion but he didn’t like it much.

We had Gam Gam and Great Granny Dyer over for a late Mother’s (Mothers-in-law?) Day Lunch.

We also got a pretty good family photo courtesy Gam Gam. Logan nearly knocked the chair over, which is why we are smiling big. It was pretty funny and no one was hurt.

We gotta catch that guy…

When Elliot has a dirty diaper, Logan has recently been speaking for him, saying things like “Mommy! Mommy! Somebody pooped in my diaper again!” to which we respond, “How dare they!” and so forth.

Today, Elliot was lying in his crib watching his mobile when all of the sudden he let out a high pitched scream! I dashed to him and discovered that the same person who has been pooping in his diapers was pulling his hair! How dare he! I extracted his hand from his hair and he was fine.

Uncle Art Comes to Visit, Uncle Tom Comes to Stay

Uncle Art came in on Wednesday to see baby Elliot and the new house. He came in at about 11:30 PM so Elliot and I were already asleep. I first saw Art yesterday at 6AM when Elliot was screaming to be fed after we gave him his medicine. Elliot woke the whole house up! Tom, who had just moved in, had a patriotic string of lights hung up in his room which mesmerized Elliot enough to calm him down… I fed him and then Tom held him for several hours that morning.

Logan got Elliot to take a bottle yesterday morning, which makes me feel relieved. I don’t know what we would do if he was not taking a bottle by the time I have to go back to work. I suppose I could take Elliot to work… I bet that wouldn’t be disruptive.

Yesterday morning we went back to see Dr. Dave at Kid’s Choice Pediatrics for follow up. I told him that I thought the Zantac was helping some but we were still having issues. He started to adjust the dose up for the medicine, but when he saw my nursing log (particularly where he nursed almost nonstop Wednesday evening from 4:30 to 10) he prescribed him Prevacid, which unfortunately is not generic, but if it works it’ll be worth it.

Here’s an amusing anecdote: Elliot needed a diaper change and I was talking to the nurse. Logan asked me to hand him a diaper so I grabbed a whole handful diapers and handed them to him without thinking. Logan responded, “I only need 1 diaper, but I also need the Desitin and wipes!”

We had Gondolier for lunch, which Elliot nearly slept through. At least he was not the loudest kid in the restaurant (that sounds like a good title for a parenting book).

That afternoon I played Rockband for the first time since Elliot was born. I was on keyboards, Art was on guitar, and Logan was on vocals. Then we hung out on the back porch for awhile. Tom was working on some contraption to moisten wheat and Art was figuring on apartments in Birmingham. Logan found him a house for rent which will hopefully be good for Art. We had hamburgers for dinner and Tom commented that he likes Sara Lee’s buns. Art and I gave Elliot his first dose of his new medicine. This one is a pill that you dissolve in water. He didn’t seem to mind it too much.

Elliot slept most of the afternoon and evening. Elliot and I went to bed at about 9. By 11, we were up again and Elliot was wide awake. Art was up so we had Elliot do a little tummy time for him and then Art sat with me while I rocked Elliot back to sleep.

Then we were up again at 1, and this time it was really bad. Elliot cried and cried such that he had a hard time latching on and when he would latch on he wouldn’t drink but for a couple of minutes before he would choke or start crying again. Logan came down and put Elliot on the dryer, which soothed him until he got off the dryer. I suggested we give him a bottle while on the dryer so that he could finally get some food in him and go to sleep. Logan replied with, “Why don’t we give him a booby? That doesn’t have any preparation time!” So, I nursed Elliot while he was on the dryer and Logan rubbed my back while I nursed since it was a rather awkward position. Elliot went to sleep and he and I spent the rest of the night in the recliner.

The next morning, Logan went to court and Art and I watched tv while Elliot slept or fed. We decided to go to Kanpai of Tokyo for Hibachi. Elliot cried most of the way there and then slept at the restaurant. Art headed back to Nashville after a fond farewell to Elliot and me. We went to Logan’s Aunt Lisa’s afterwards to visit. Her daughter Kyra watched fascinated as I breastfed Elliot.

20120512-123551.jpg

We headed home and Elliot and I took a nap. Gam Gam came over and successfully gave him a bottle. He hungrily ate 5fl. oz. of my stored milk and he was still hungry for boob! Later that evening he had a huge spit up right in the middle of our bed. Maybe we over did it?

1 Month Birthday

About this time 1 month ago, Elliot was getting his first bath, which a nurse and Logan performed. I was zonked on pain meds. I remember when I came to, Logan was shirtless doing skin-to-skin with Elliot to keep him warm. It was sweet.

Elliot played with his new play mat with hanging things this afternoon. He was distinctly batting at a green seahorse and a blue whale!

Logan and I have been organizing closets to get space for Tom to move in tomorrow. Logan gave me a little break from Elliot to work on my stuff, which was appreciated. It made me enjoy playing with Elliot later that much more.

John Shanks sent us the following song, which was appropriate.
You Ruined Everything – Jonathan Coulton

And, just in case you thought I was kidding…

Mommy goes to the Doctor

This morning when Elliot went back to sleep at 6AM I was very full, bordering on engorgement. So I pumped. I don’t know what possessed me, either insane curiosity, a need to get my frozen milk supplies up, or just being stupid from the lack of sleep, but I pumped 5 fl.oz., effectively draining both breasts. Big mistake. Elliot slept for a couple of hours and then ate. I thought I had satisfied him, but as soon as we got to the doctor’s office he started wondering where I put his leftovers. The staff were kind and patient as I tried to nurse him. Eventually he got enough to knock him out for a bit and the nurses took him so I could talk to the doctor.
“Have you tried swaddling him?”
“He doesn’t like it. He kicks out.”
“Have you tried the wraps with Velcro?”
“No, he doesn’t like being swaddled.”
“Have you heard of The Happiest Baby on the Block?”
“…”
And so forth…

When I got home I fed Elliot back and forth for almost two hours while I waited on Logan to get home (which took extra long because Aunt Linzy stranded herself and needed a ride). Eventually, Elliot fell asleep (and so did I). When Logan got home, he fed him a bottle and Elliot actually took a couple of ounces! Now we are relaxing after watching Doctor Who while Logan makes pasta for dinner.
