Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

2 Month Check-up

Yesterday, Logan had court in the morning. Slappy, Linzy, and Gam Gam all took turns watching him throughout the day. Logan noticed that Gam Gam seems to be able to get Elliot to sleep so he studied her technique. She uses several blankets and wraps him up loosely. So we are trying that now. It seems to keep him asleep just as long as the velcro swaddle but he doesn’t wake up mad.

Logan bought Elliot a new Jungle James. He found one for sale at T. J. Maxx and couldn’t resist. This one has lights and sounds and a tummy time pillow!

I think his expression in this picture looks a lot like my baby pictures.

Elliot had his 2 month check up today with Dr. Dave. I managed to rush out of work a little early and meet them for the appointment. I was glad that I did! Elliot needed 3 shots today for routine vaccinations. I held him while the nurse stuck him and then I fed him shortly after, which made him practically forget what had happened! He has been pretty sore this evening though, so we gave him some Infant Tylenol drops. They seem to be working. He also has George Harrison Horse, which helps.

How it went

He did fine. I was worried that he would be totally freaked out. He was difficult to get to sleep in the crib but once he was out at about 9:30 he slept until 12:30. I heard his increasingly agitated grunting on the monitor so I went to get him before it escalated. I fed him in our bed where I fell asleep and woke up again at 1:30 with him beside me. I tried to put him in the bassinet but he woke up. So I changed his diaper, fed him the other side, rocked him, and put him back in the crib. At that point I turned off the monitor since it was defeating the purpose of the entire endeavor of me getting a little more sleep. At 4:30 I heard Elliot yelling (not crying, yelling, like as in, “Hey! Hey! You guys left me in here!”) so I went to feed him again. He rested in our bed again until about 5 when I nursed him the other side. At 5:30 I managed to get him back in his crib so Logan and I could go get ready for the day. All in all, I’d say it was a success.

In other news, Elliot got to meet his dad’s Pappy yesterday. He fell asleep on Pappy’s belly for about and hour and a half! Pappy and Juanita brought him an adorable outfit set with a sports themed onesie, pjs, a bib, and a toy.

20120612-085003.jpg

Yesterday evening Elliot almost rolled over back to front! He swung his leg to the side and got his hips square on the ground but he could not figure out what to do with his arm underneath him. Logan eventually helped him the rest of the way to tummy time.

That’s it! We’re trying the crib tonight!

Until now, Elliot has slept in his bassinet at night in our room. He has only tried the crib a few times during the day for naps. Last night he woke up at 1:30 and about every hour after that. I have been putting him in the bed with me for feedings, but then he usually ends up staying there where we continually wake each other up for the rest of the night. So tonight Logan and I are going to “parent” up and try Elliot in his own room. I fully expect to be feeding him at 1:30 or so, but hopefully we can get him back to sleep in his room after that. And who knows… Maybe he’ll just sleep through the night! I think we will try him with the monitors on just in case, but I feel like I will be able to hear him one door away if he needs us… We also need to figure out how much light he’ll need. Here goes nothing…

Month Birthdays and Anniversaries

I got to celebrate Elliot’s 2 month birthday… at 2 AM. It was ok though. I had my end of the year Radiology Banquet that night so I didn’t get to spend that much time with him that evening. Thus, I justify his slumber party as being permissible.

I updated his baby book and months of his first year picture frame with the following photos.
Elliot really likes that little boy in the mirror (picture on the right) and has had long conversations with him at Logan’s office!

That night I went to the banquet with Logan and got the superlative “Most likely to be Chief Resident of surgery… anesthesiology… internal medicine… and radiology!” from the graduating seniors. Glad to know that my innate bossiness and mad organizational skills don’t go unnoticed!

Elliot stayed home with Gam Gam and Slappy. He was reportedly well behaved and never made an upset sound the entire time! Gam Gam gave him a bath and Slappy let him sleep on him.

The next day was Logan’s and my fifth year wedding anniversary!

We got the “Had First Kid” and “Own a House” goals in just under the wire!

I spent the morning at David’s Bridal with Aunt Linzy and her wedding party admiring her wedding dress and picking out our dresses. Linzy has decided that we will all be in long chiffon floor length dresses but each is a different pattern. Here is mine!

Elliot came along since there were many people to hold him.

We all went to Olive Garden afterwards.

Elliot ate Preston’s nose in addition to Boob milk for lunch.

The Belmont Stakes was yesterday evening, but Elliot was less interested in it (probably because “I’ll Have Another” was scratched).

Logan and I took Elliot to Gam Gam’s and Slappy’s house in Pigeon Forge and then went to Alamo Steakhouse to celebrate our Anniversary. We managed to talk about a few things besides Elliot, but talking about Elliot made us happy and laugh!

The pictures before our date fraustrate me since in one Elliot is looking the wrong way and in the other Logan is looking the wrong way!

Elliot was a bit upset when we left him, but Gam Gam texted me a picture shortly after we left to let me know he was ok.

Gam Gam gave him a bath again and lotioned him with Baby Magic. Gam Gam really likes giving a baby a bath, but I really like suctioning out his boogers with the nasal aspirator… We all have our things.

We got home and to sleep without incident. Today we are catching up on sleep and chores. We took Elliot to Walmart to grocery shop and tried out his stroller. I thought he would hate it but he slept the whole time!

Fun fact about Elliot: He has the most incredible, irresistible pouty face. It is the saddest most pitiful thing ever, so I had to take a picture!

Exciting Times!

I found Logan’s Father’s Day Gift.

Monday night, Elliot, Gingy, and I went to have coffee with Gabi and Gabi’s mom at The Coffee and Ice Cream Shop in Seymour. Gabi’s mom seemed to like Elliot. We talked about swaddles and she mentioned that Russian babies are practically put in a cocoon. Elliot would hate that!

Later, I read “Frederick” to him, a nice book that Jessica got him. He liked it! We went to bed and for the first time I fell asleep while feeding piglet style. An hour later, he was still lying on his side in front of me (thankfully not squished!)

20120607-205359.jpg

Tuesday, Logan tried taking him to the office alone. Elliot gave daddy heck. Per Logan he screamed all most the entire time. Logan was only able to write one e-mail the whole morning. Lynn, Logan’s sweet neighbor, brought Elliot a “Jungle James” for the office, which Elliot wouldn’t even look at for all his crying!

I did not have conference again, so I met up with my family at Agave Azul. Afterward, Elliot got to meet our friend Tim at The Fresh Market. He liked him instantly! He grabbed Tim’s finger and squealed, probably thinking “Oh, a real live leprechaun!”

That night he got a little over 5 hours of sleep right in a row!

Wednesday morning, Elliot awoke before I left which was nice. I played with him at his Jungle James! He got fussy right before I left, so I and then held and rocked him. He conked right back out! Later, he grabbed his octopus toy again for daddy.

20120607-205316.jpg

I got to stop by at lunch briefly to see him. Great Granny Slappy and Slappy were there and had brought KFC. I would say it was hardly worth driving 40 minutes to see him for 20, but it was totally worth it! When I came home later, Elliot entertaining himself on Jungle James. That evening he grabbed his pacifier with his hand, accidentally removed it from his mouth, but then managed to put it back in his mouth!

We read “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel,” another nice book that Jessica got for him. While we were at the hospital, Gam Gam and Linzy brought Jessica’s present by. When I opened it, I saw Mike Mulligan and exclaimed, “Oh yeah! This is the story where they turn the steam shovel into a -” but Logan interrupted “Don’t ruin it for him!”

Today, Elliot was up again to say bye bye to mommy. His Aunt Lisa and Cousin Kyra came to babysit him while Logan went to court in the morning. Lisa texted cute pictures of Elliot all morning!

Tomorrow is Elliot’s 2 month birthday! I think this first week back has gone pretty well. I haven’t cried or been particularly worried about him. I know he is well cared for and loved. And I know when I come back from work there is someone special waiting for me. It makes me happy and excited to go home!

W Day

Well, that was hard. Harder than I expected. It’s strange to go from spending almost every waking and non-waking moment with someone to leaving them for 10 hours of the day. Elliot was courteous and gave me a 4.5 hour block and then a 2.5 hour block. He wanted breakfast at 5:15, which worked out well since I had planned to get up at 6. I was able to get him back to sleep and have plenty of time to get myself ready. I pumped before I left and put his bottle in the refrigerator with the date and the inscription “Love, Mommy.” Then I kissed Logan and him goodbye and I was off. The radio in the car played “I Wanna Rock and Roll All Nite” which fortunately is not what Elliot and I did last night. At least on the rocking aspect. Hopefully he will get a good roll in today.

Gingy is here to help us with the transition. Today she, Logan, and Elliot spent the morning at Logan’s office, where Elliot actually slept most of the time while Logan got some work done. He took his bottle without too much issue except that he is not drinking quite so much as we expected. With nursing there is not really anyway to tell how much he is eating except by how long he has been latched on. And he likes to latch on for quite awhile sometimes, though less often now. He is still gaining weight and seems satisfied which is the main thing.

I did not have conference today at lunch, so I went to Aubrey’s with my family for lunch. It was so great to see Elliot! I helped feed him a bottle and hugged and kissed him as much as I could. It was wonderful!

Yesterday we took Elliot to the Ijam’s Nature Center. Uncle Tom took a bunch of pictures!

I carried him around in the Bjorn first.

Then Logan carried him for awhile… like a football…

8 Weeks

Elliot is 8 weeks old today! It is also my last day of leave. So this week’s anniversary of his birth is bittersweet. But there is no getting out of it. We have a mortgage to pay now and mommy cannot get anymore behind in her program or she won’t graduate on time. So it goes. Elliot will be getting quite accustomed to dad’s office soon. Maybe we’ll get more posts from him about Elliot. For that matter, maybe some of Elliot’s relatives who have kindly offered to babysit would like to post. We could probably set that up! I will do what I can to post at least once a week, but I imagine my posting is going to decline somewhat.

Yesterday Elliot rolled for the first time! He was doing “Tummy Time” and was lifting his head and chest, a feat he has been performing since Memorial Day. Mommy went to get the camera and as soon as she got back (but too soon to have the camera going) his big head wobbled and he rolled towards his right! He looked surprised but pleased.

Yesterday Dolly Parton sent him his first Imagination Library book. Logan read him The Little Engine that Could and he paid pretty good attention. I thought he could!

We ordered the first new bead for my bracelet yesterday. We got a smiling crab for Elliot’s first swim since his boat has a crab on it.

20120603-102046.jpg

Last night Elliot would not fall asleep until 11 and then was up from 2 to 3, which frustrated mommy who will need to sleep tonight for work tomorrow! He seemed like he was getting used to the swaddle, so I put him in it while awake to see if he would kick around for a bit and then go to sleep. He didn’t. Turns out the swaddle still makes him mad. But he does sleep better (or at least longer) in it. I also tried leaving his feet in while I nursed him piglet style at 2am and then quickly velcroing him up as soon as he fell asleep after eating. Didn’t work. My frustration was escalating. Then Elliot pooted (which might have been the issue all along). Logan took him to change his diaper and when he came back he put Elliot to sleep, explaining every step gently along the way. “It’s time to go to sleep buddy.” “Here is your pacifier.” “Now I am going to put you in your monkey swaddle.” “Now we are going to your bassinet to sleep.” It was magical! I had to pop that pacifier back in his mouth a couple of times but otherwise he was out. Go Logan!

Save Point

Mommy did a couple of short test runs of going to the hospital on Thursday and Friday. Thursday Elliot went to daddy’s office, where he tried to keep Logan from getting his work done. Friday he stayed home with daddy. Both days he took a bottle without significant issue.

We went out to El Paso last night for dinner with Gam Gam and Slappy. Elliot was awake and well behaved, which always seems to surprise me. Slappy commented that he was looking forward to taking Elliot out when babysitting him so he could say, “Well, his mom is at the hospital and his dad is in jail!” Gam Gam and I talked about how empty life would feel without children. Things are hard now but in 20 years I could not picture myself having not had kids.

We read Elliot “Anything for You” last night, which his sweet cousin Kyra gave to him.

Logan and I are avid gamers and often view the world from that perspective. For example, Elliot’s last save point was in his bassinet. He falls asleep and ends up back there, from which he has to once again figure out how to tell us what he wants with limited communication skills. “A” is kick and squirm and “B” is grunt and, eventually, cry. He’ll learn more skills as he levels up.

The Caesarean Saga, part 3: The Afterbirth

My significantly smaller belly, new baby, and I rode to recovery. Logan went to tell our families, who had been at the hospital for 14 hrs at this point, that everything went well. In recovery, Elliot and I made our first attempt to breastfeed. The nurse helped me to try to get him to latch. I don’t think that he was on for particularly long. My mom and dad came back to recovery and they were so glad that I was alright and so pleased with Elliot. It was everything mom could do to not hold Elliot (since she had a cold). Elliot was put back in the warmer and the pediatric nurse checked over him again while my nurse checked on me. Logan’s parents visited next and they were so excited too.

I remember being so thirsty and they would only give me a few ice chips and then some sprite. I drank them quickly because I felt fine from a gastroenterologic stand point, but Logan kept encouraging me to slow down.

The nurse that evaluated me in triage the previous Tuesday and sent me home stopped by to congratulate me. That was nice.

After we had recovered a suitable amount we rode to our new room in “Mother Baby.” I rode by the windows of the waiting room while holding Elliot. I waved tiredly at my tired but excited family. The nurse had told me that my family would be allowed to come and see me in Mother Baby once I had been checked in. However, they came on in anyways. They were ready to hold Elliot! I told the nurse that there was nothing I could do to keep them back and she understood. My family for one was exhausted and needed to get back to middle Tennessee and the Dyers were exhausted as well.

20120605-161441.jpg20120605-161455.jpg20120605-161508.jpg

I got checked in and was given more pain meds. I fell asleep for a bit and when I came to the nurse had given Elliot his first bath and Logan was holding him skin to skin to keep him warm. Logan was my hero for taking care of most of Elliot’s meconium diapers throughout our stay!

That night I had the most wonderful nurse named Kim and CNA whose name I cannot remember. They could not do enough for us. Kim helped me to walk again in the wee hours of the morning and the CNA happily swaddled Elliot for me as needed. I wanted my new baby to stay in the room with me as much as possible so that we could keep practicing breastfeeding (not to mention I was enamored). I remember one particular time before the epidural wore off Elliot started crying. His bassinet was on the other side of the room and I could not get to him. Logan was asleep on the sofa next to me and was not roused by his cries like I was. I called Logan’s name several times and eventually threw a packet of crackers at him to try to get his attention but it was in vain. I called the nurses and they brought me Elliot.

The next morning I was visited by another friend in anesthesia. He was making his rounds and asked how everything was going. So far so good. The epidural had worn off alright and so their team was signing off on me. He gave me his congratulations.

Then the nonstop stream of people began. Nurses, kitchen staff, someone to check Elliot’s hearing, lab techs, CNAs, cleaning staff, someone to perform Elliot’s newborn screen, etc. All this while Elliot and I were trying to figure out how to breastfeed, which was not going well.

A photographer came in at the mid morning. We tried to put Elliot in his UT outfit for his pictures but it was too small! He wore the hat for some but was otherwise in his diaper. Gam Gam gave him a very soft white blanket which provided an excellent backdrop for his photos. After the pictures the photographer tried to discuss photo packages with us but I could not concentrate for trying to breastfeed the crying baby. Logan sent her away and asked her to come back in a half hour.

Gam Gam and Aunt Linzy came by next. They were there to take care of me and the baby while Logan ran home for a bit. When they arrived I was eating lunch with Elliot inside my gown on my chest resting. The lactation consultant had suggested this to try to calm him down so that he might be able to latch on. I sent Gam Gam and Linzy to help Logan pick out pictures so I could focus on Elliot and lunch. They returned after picking out some photos and kept me company and Elliot in clean diapers until Logan returned.

The lactation consultant had shown me how to do the football hold with Elliot, which helped keep him off my tender belly. She also gave me a plastic nipple which was easier for him to latch onto and some glucose to try to calm him down so that he could better latch on. Still Elliot cried a lot when he was not sleeping and was having a lot of trouble latching on. I was becoming very frustrated which did not go well with my exhaustion.

Most of our visitors could see that we were so tired and would hold the baby briefly, give us their well wishes, and leave. I did have to turn away one visitor, our radiology program coordinator, because I was breastfeeding, which I felt bad about. However, there was one couple who would not take the hint and leave us be. They wanted to stay and chat and hold the baby in the late afternoon, by which point I was so incredibly frustrated with breastfeeding I could hardly stand it. I was as cold to these relatives as possible but they would not take the hint that I needed to be resting and practicing breastfeeding, not talking to them. It wasn’t their fault. They were just excited. Finally Logan sent them away.

It was at that point that I realized I no longer needed to keep it together and breathe for Elliot. I broke down and cried and cried. Why was breastfeeding so difficult for us? Why could I not seem to help this crying baby? Why did we not realize my baby was so large ahead of time? And why was I in labor for 33 hours only to have a C-section??? On and on my thoughts went and I sobbed uncontrollably with Logan consoling me. He turned away my next set of visitors, who were more than a little hurt. I tried to call them back hoping they would be understanding when they saw me in hysterics but they left anyways, which was fine by me. At that point Logan and I decided that we would not be accepting anymore visitors during our stay.

That night Elliot cried and cried again. I felt bad for our neighbors. I held Elliot yelling over Logan’s sleeping head but Logan was immune with exhaustion. I finally managed to wake him by pushing his bed. “How can you not hear him?” I cried. “He is making me crazy!” Logan woke and tiredly comforted us. We called the nurse and asked if their was anything we could do to help our baby. She suggested the “Supplemental Nursing System” which was a small catheter with formula that you tape over your nipple. I hated to give Elliot formula as I wanted to make sure that I was stimulated enough to breastfeed him, but desperate times called for desperate measures. I fed him with the SNS and he was much happier. We all got a little sleep.

The next morning the nurse told me that she had been by once to check on me and I was talking in my sleep. I told her about my pregnancy and that I was due any day. Weird…

My second day with Elliot was much better. We had only one visitor (Slappy, who had called ahead) and we spent the day resting and focusing on breastfeeding. I met another lactation consultant who was wonderfully encouraging, and with her and Logan’s help we got Elliot latched on and feeding. In fact I fed him nonstop for 3 hours that evening but still he was not satisfied. We tried the SNS again so that we could get a little sleep.

Still in the wee hours of the morning he cried and cried. The power went off at one point and the room became eerily quiet. Apparently a white noise generator had been on the whole time without me noticing. But when it came back on I could not help but notice it. I finally decided I needed a change of scenery so I left the room for the first time. While I walked the halls I made an important discovery. Other babies were crying too. I could not hear them before with the white noise. Maybe I was not the worst parent ever! We did send Elliot to the newborn nursery briefly in those wee hours. We decided we would be better parents if we got a little sleep.

The next morning we got ready to go home. I have never been so excited to leave anywhere. The hospital is a terrible place to rest. My doctor came by that morning. I thanked her for our lives. Modern medicine is an amazing thing. The pediatrician came by and told me that Elliot had lost too much weight and needed to see an out patient pediatrician the following day. Logan set that up.

When it was time to go, we dressed Elliot in a new UT shirt that Logan had brought from home. We then put him in his car seat, which he immediately did not like. I called the nurse for the car seat check but somehow the message got lost. So we waited and waited with Elliot screaming. I opened the door so the nurses could hear him yelling and hurry up. Finally I took him out of his car seat. We chatted with a friend of mine in family medicine while I waited on the nurse. He was impressed by Elliot’s size and said we were missing out on the newborn experience and starting with a 1 month old instead!

Finally the nurse came and apologized for our wait. Elliot’s car seat passed. They wanted me to ride through the lobby in a wheelchair with the baby in his car seat on my lap. This was a bad idea for two reasons. One, I didn’t want the seat on my barely healed C-section wound, and two, I didn’t want to ride through the lobby where any number of my coworkers might be passing with Elliot screaming. So the nurse let me hold him in a swaddle and put the car seat in a basket behind the chair.

We rode to freedom! Logan was waiting for us with the car. We fastened Elliot in and I rode beside him. He cried for a bit but then fell asleep with the car soothing him. My parents met us at our home to take care of us. They stayed with us for the next week.

Elliot still cried a lot those first few days at home. I remember in the middle of the night with him finally going to my parents room asking, “Does anyone want to hold a crying baby for a couple of hours while I try to get some sleep?” My dad confused started to sit up to help but my mom jumped out of the bed over him shouting, “I want him! I want him!” She rocked him in the den but I could not stay away. So I slept on the couch beside them while they rocked.

At the pediatrician’s office Elliot was down to 8lbs 9oz. The doctor wanted us to come back the next day. That night we continued the on demand feedings and tried the SNS again. The next day my milk finally came in! Elliot stopped losing weight and had gained an ounce at his check up. He was a whole new baby! We were so relieved! Maybe we could take care of this life we had created. Maybe we would for the first time in a week get some sleep. Maybe everything was going to be alright. 🙂
