Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

Shutdown?! No way!

Elliot went to his first football game last week. It was Logan’s high school homecoming. Elliot enjoyed all of the pageantry. He also like the Mellow Mushroom Pizza!
IMG_4542

Saturday, Elliot got to go to his first someone else’s birthday party. The theme was Pirates and Princesses, so Logan and I dressed him accordingly. It was rather difficult to get him to keep the hat on his head.

Gingy and Grandpa came up that night in preparation for our trip to Washington D.C. Logan, Elliot, and I dressed up for dinner, thinking that we would be going to the Boo at the Zoo afterwards. Unfortunately, we missed the Boo (boohoo?) but we still enjoyed dinner at Calhoun’s.
IMG_4606IMG_3228IMG_3224IMG_4610

The next morning, Gingy, Grandpa, Elliot, and I began our drive to D.C. Elliot handled the drive well, needing only a couple of comfort stops.
IMG_3230IMG_20131013_120249

I had to go to a class all week, but Elliot enjoyed the sites of D.C. and the surrounding area with his grandparents.

On Monday, they went to Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington.

On Tuesday, they went to Alexandria. Elliot really liked the planes!

IMG_20131015_143449IMG_20131015_141100IMG_20131015_142011

On Wednesday, they went to Fort Frederick, where Elliot saw a choo choo and a canon!
IMG_3272IMG_3254IMG_3257IMG_3255

They also found a playground!

On Thursday, the government reopened, but Elliot and grandparents decided to stay in the Silver Spring area with mommy! They found a playground in the morning and I got to go eat lunch with them at a little deli! Then Elliot took a huge nap to make up for all the naps he missed this week.
IMG_3275IMG_3277

On Friday, Elliot, Gingy, and Grandpa finally got to go see the monuments of D.C. Elliot begins with a sit in at the front of the White House.

Saturday morning, Gingy and Grandpa bravely took Elliot on his first flight back to Knoxville. I was glad that they could come with me to D.C. It was nice to be able to spend some quality time with the boy in the evenings and I know they enjoyed taking him to see all the sights during the day!

18 month check-up

I took today off and Elliot, Logan, and I found a nice park on Martin Mill and had a nice picnic lunch.

Logan – “He’s outstanding in his field!”

Elliot had his 18 month check up this afternoon and had to get four shots… But he did great! He cried when the nurse stuck him and I hugged him tight and said I was sorry. Then he got over it right away, like it never happened. I was so proud. My brave sweet boy! He also gave the doctor a fist bump!

Tonight, I found a way to get him to let me brush his teeth really well. I put a toothbrush in my mouth and let him brush my teeth while I brushed his. Logan tells me he does something similar with brushing his hair where they take turns styling each other.

ME

Elliot has been saying “Me” recently and Logan did not know what he meant until a couple of days ago when he showed him a picture of us and Elliot pointed to me, as in “Mom-Me!” Yay!

I finally got to spend some time with the boy this weekend. Elliot and I even dressed the same!

Elliot and I went out for lunch yesterday at the cheesecake factory with some of my co-workers and their kids.
IMG_4537

Elliot was pretty well behaved, but he was pretty tired by the time the meal was complete. We had to run out at one point late in the meal to get some stuff for Logan out of my car to give to Aunt Lisa. Elliot cried to stay with Aunt Lisa! He was ready to go. So we headed home for nap time, which ended up being rather short since he fell asleep in the car and woke some with the transfer to the crib.

As far as new baby tricks, Elliot recently started opening doors. As a result, many of the doors are now baby proofed.

Elliot driving Slappy’s car! I don’t think he can lock us out of this one, but he is pretty tricky!

Logan and Elliot came to visit me at work today for lunch in the hospital cafeteria! I was so glad to see them. Elliot mostly ran around and made friends while Logan and I ate. We got him a corn dog, but I ended up eating it. I was sad to see them go. I miss them both so much. I wish things were different and I lived in a magical world where there were no bills to pay and I could just play with the boy all the time… or even some of the time. That would be nice too.

Catching up

Where to begin… this has been a wacky month. Logan and I have been on the road a lot because I have been interviewing for abdominal imaging fellowship positions, which is a one year program providing subspecialized training. I am happy to report that my search is over and I have accepted a position at Vanderbilt starting July 2015. In addition to really liking the program, logistically it makes the most sense. We are very excited!

While Logan and I were driving all over the southeast, Elliot was having fun at his Gingy’s. He even went to her Montessori school a few days, where he reportedly did quite well despite being a little underage for the program. Here are some pictures of Elliot learning.

To back up a bit, we had our annual “Cabin in the Mountains” celebration over Labor Day weekend. Elliot, Logan, Uncle Arthur, and I went up a day early to stay in the Safari tents!

We visited Linzy and Elliot went for a ride!

We got there Wednesday afternoon and Art, Elliot, and I went to Best Italian for dinner, while Logan went to pick up his dad from the airport. Elliot ate all of the olives from my pizza! He is a weird kid…

That night we played Trivial Pursuit Jr. and Card Against Humanity with Linzy and Ian. Elliot helped roll the dice! We slept in the luxury tents that night and the next morning we went swimming in the pool. Logan was making Elliot laugh by diving in the pool and surfacing right in front of him and me… that is until he scraped his poor nose on the bottom of the pool. I guess it was no diving for a reason…

We went to some hotdog place for lunch, where I had a mac and cheese hotdog. Then we headed for the cabin. Elliot needed a nap, but he did not get much of one since he woke up when we arrived. We spent the afternoon entertaining the boy and trying to get the internet to work. Soon, other cabin goers arrived; Cindy, Jeff, Mary, Joe, Gingy, Grandpa, Peggy, and Kenny. We all ate Papa Murphy’s Pizza and visited.
IMG_1039

The next day, we went on a little hike to try to find a choo choo. We didn’t find it, but Logan and Elliot found some flowers.
IMG_4462

Then we went to the Old Mill for lunch. That evening, Tom, Jeremy, Laura, Jessica, and Ryan arrived. Tom’s birthday was that weekend, so he got an awesome Thomas cake!
IMG_3144

A bunch of cabin goers went to bike and run Cades Cove the next morning. We decided to pass. There was a bit of excitement later when one of the vans had a run in with a kid on a dirt bike. Fortunately, everyone was ok. Logan and Art went to the Vols football game later. We stayed in and ate some delicious pork that Cindy and Jeff made.

The next day, we went to Gatlinburg. We ate at the Smoky Mountain Brewery.
IMG_3146IMG_3149

We got some awesome passes that let us do all things Ripley. So we went to the Ripley’s Believe it or not, The Mirror Maze, and the Aquarium.
IMG_4466IMG_4464

IMG_3168IMG_3170
IMG_4473
IMG_3181IMG_4475

The next day, Logan and I left for North Carolina to begin the interview process (which concluded as above). Elliot left for Gingy’s. All in all a good cabin experience.

The next weekend, Tom took Elliot and me sailing for the first time.
IMG_20130907_124014

Here is Elliot exploring the bunk in Tom’s sail boat. Pretty nice!
IMG_20130907_143755

I think that about catches everything up. I really need to put a post with Elliot’s most recent vocabulary. Here are some samples: bah = applesauce pouch, night night = blanket, and do bah do bah do = we’re not sure, but it is really cute!

Sometimes things go awry and you end up driving a stick shift with a canoe on top of it…

We had yet another crazy weekend. I worked Friday overnight. Logan went to Cincinnati for a football game with his dad. Elliot stay with Gam Gam/ Gammie. I got home Saturday after my shift, napped for a few hours and then went to go tutor one of my attending’s kids in Algebra. Then I went and got the boy from Brigitte and we went to Chick-fil-a for dinner, which resulted in me with a sticky flip flop. We went home after that, went through the bed time routine, went to bed, got up at midnight, put the boy in bed with me, got up again at 6, put the boy back in his crib, tried to go back to sleep but couldn’t so got up an worked on applications for fellowship.

Around 8, Elliot awoke. We watched some of his TV show together and then we went downstairs for breakfast. While I was finding something for me to eat, I heard my phone ring. I rushed towards it, but Elliot cried, so I had to go back and get him. Then I went and got my phone. I had missed a call from the ER… *Bum bum BUM (dramatic reverb)* I returned the call and this sweet resident in the class below me said, “Did you know that you are on the schedule to work today?” *GASP* At this point I am already 30 minutes late to relieve this guy from his overnight shift. I ask the guy for 30 more minutes to get there. Then I rushed to get my scrubs, bag, Elliot’s bag, Elliot’s breakfast, and Elliot and threw them all in the car. Then I ran back up for the boy’s tablet, shoes, and… what am I forgetting… DIAPERS!

We drove off for the hospital. I got on the phone en route. I called Logan and told him the situation. There was not a whole lot he could do two states away, but he said he would make some phone calls. Then I called Uncle Tom, who thankfully happened to be up. He said he would meet me at the hospital to come rescue Elliot. I called the overnight resident and asked him to meet me at the door with the pagers to facilitate his getting out of there without further delay.

I arrived at the hospital front door. Amazingly, Tom had made it there before me, him and his canoe attached to the top of his car. We traded cars, since I was out of time on switching the car seat around and, after a quick review on how to start a manual transmission car and a quick summary of events in the ER from the overnight resident, I was off to try to park. I did a lot of coasting, for fear that if I stopped the car I would not be able to restart it. Also, of course, a couple of other residents walked by as I drove. So I waved.

Later, Lisa called me and came over to relieve Tom. She and Elliot had a nice rest of the day, while I worked… Living near family is very very very nice. My back-up plan would have been to take Elliot to the ER and turn on the videos on his tablet and hope he didn’t get into too much stuff, which he probably would have. The worst part though, besides leaving my coffee at home on the Keurig, was missing out on a day without plans with the the boy… Oh well, at least I got a picture…

Come on Ride the Train, and Ride it! Choo Choo!

If you feel like Grumpin’… It’s up to you!

Elliot has really been into trains lately. He loves watching Thomas on Netflix and playing with his take and play toy engines that he and his daddy have been collecting. This weekend, we took him to the Track in Pigeon Forge to let him ride the train.
