Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

How it went

He did fine. I was worried that he would be totally freaked out. He was difficult to get to sleep in the crib but once he was out at about 9:30 he slept until 12:30. I heard his increasingly agitated grunting on the monitor so I went to get him before it escalated. I fed him in our bed where I fell asleep and woke up again at 1:30 with him beside me. I tried to put him in the bassinet but he woke up. So I changed his diaper, fed him the other side, rocked him, and put him back in the crib. At that point I turned off the monitor since it was defeating the purpose of the entire endeavor of me getting a little more sleep. At 4:30 I heard Elliot yelling (not crying, yelling, like as in, “Hey! Hey! You guys left me in here!”) so I went to feed him again. He rested in our bed again until about 5 when I nursed him the other side. At 5:30 I managed to get him back in his crib so Logan and I could go get ready for the day. All in all, I’d say it was a success.

In other news, Elliot got to meet his dad’s Pappy yesterday. He fell asleep on Pappy’s belly for about and hour and a half! Pappy and Juanita brought him an adorable outfit set with a sports themed onesie, pjs, a bib, and a toy.

Yesterday evening Elliot almost rolled over back to front! He swung his leg to the side and got his hips square on the ground but he could not figure out what to do with his arm underneath him. Logan eventually helped him the rest of the way to tummy time.

Exciting Times!

I found Logan’s Father’s Day Gift.

Monday night, Elliot, Gingy, and I went to have coffee with Gabi and Gabi’s mom at The Coffee and Ice Cream Shop in Seymour. Gabi’s mom seemed to like Elliot. We talked about swaddles and she mentioned that Russian babies are practically put in a cocoon. Elliot would hate that!

Later, I read “Frederick” to him, a nice book that Jessica got him. He liked it! We went to bed and for the first time I fell asleep while feeding piglet style. An hour later, he was still lying on his side in front of me (thankfully not squished!)

Tuesday, Logan tried taking him to the office alone. Elliot gave daddy heck. Per Logan he screamed all most the entire time. Logan was only able to write one e-mail the whole morning. Lynn, Logan’s sweet neighbor, brought Elliot a “Jungle James” for the office, which Elliot wouldn’t even look at for all his crying!

I did not have conference again, so I met up with my family at Agave Azul. Afterward, Elliot got to meet our friend Tim at The Fresh Market. He liked him instantly! He grabbed Tim’s finger and squealed, probably thinking “Oh, a real live leprechaun!”

That night he got a little over 5 hours of sleep right in a row!

Wednesday morning, Elliot awoke before I left which was nice. I played with him at his Jungle James! He got fussy right before I left, so I and then held and rocked him. He conked right back out! Later, he grabbed his octopus toy again for daddy.

I got to stop by at lunch briefly to see him. Great Granny Slappy and Slappy were there and had brought KFC. I would say it was hardly worth driving 40 minutes to see him for 20, but it was totally worth it! When I came home later, Elliot entertaining himself on Jungle James. That evening he grabbed his pacifier with his hand, accidentally removed it from his mouth, but then managed to put it back in his mouth!

We read “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel,” another nice book that Jessica got for him. While we were at the hospital, Gam Gam and Linzy brought Jessica’s present by. When I opened it, I saw Mike Mulligan and exclaimed, “Oh yeah! This is the story where they turn the steam shovel into a -” but Logan interrupted “Don’t ruin it for him!”

Today, Elliot was up again to say bye bye to mommy. His Aunt Lisa and Cousin Kyra came to babysit him while Logan went to court in the morning. Lisa texted cute pictures of Elliot all morning!

Tomorrow is Elliot’s 2 month birthday! I think this first week back has gone pretty well. I haven’t cried or been particularly worried about him. I know he is well cared for and loved. And I know when I come back from work there is someone special waiting for me. It makes me happy and excited to go home!

8 Weeks

Elliot is 8 weeks old today! It is also my last day of leave. So this week’s anniversary of his birth is bittersweet. But there is no getting out of it. We have a mortgage to pay now and mommy cannot get anymore behind in her program or she won’t graduate on time. So it goes. Elliot will be getting quite accustomed to dad’s office soon. Maybe we’ll get more posts from him about Elliot. For that matter, maybe some of Elliot’s relatives who have kindly offered to babysit would like to post. We could probably set that up! I will do what I can to post at least once a week, but I imagine my posting is going to decline somewhat.

Yesterday Elliot rolled for the first time! He was doing “Tummy Time” and was lifting his head and chest, a feat he has been performing since Memorial Day. Mommy went to get the camera and as soon as she got back (but too soon to have the camera going) his big head wobbled and he rolled towards his right! He looked surprised but pleased.

Yesterday Dolly Parton sent him his first Imagination Library book. Logan read him The Little Engine that Could and he paid pretty good attention. I thought he could!

We ordered the first new bead for my bracelet yesterday. We got a smiling crab for Elliot’s first swim since his boat has a crab on it.

Last night Elliot would not fall asleep until 11 and then was up from 2 to 3, which frustrated mommy who will need to sleep tonight for work tomorrow! He seemed like he was getting used to the swaddle, so I put him in it while awake to see if he would kick around for a bit and then go to sleep. He didn’t. Turns out the swaddle still makes him mad. But he does sleep better (or at least longer) in it. I also tried leaving his feet in while I nursed him piglet style at 2am and then quickly velcroing him up as soon as he fell asleep after eating. Didn’t work. My frustration was escalating. Then Elliot pooted (which might have been the issue all along). Logan took him to change his diaper and when he came back he put Elliot to sleep, explaining every step gently along the way. “It’s time to go to sleep buddy.” “Here is your pacifier.” “Now I am going to put you in your monkey swaddle.” “Now we are going to your bassinet to sleep.” It was magical! I had to pop that pacifier back in his mouth a couple of times but otherwise he was out. Go Logan!

It’s Getting Better All the Time

Elliot slept for 3.75hrs last night without waking! Just when I thought he would never sleep for more than 3 hours at a time… I think it might have something to do with our new non-squeaking bed. That and Logan got him in a really tight swaddle.

Elliot spends more of his awake time pleasant and not crying. I love it! Makes me melt!

Also, I boxed up the maternity clothes today. VICTORY IS MINE!

I’m trying to decide what to do about professional photographs. I have a coupon from my doctor’s office for the “Watch Me Grow” package from Reflection and Images Photography. I still have to pay for the session, which are discounted at $25 bucks apiece. Plus, I would want to get some digital copies, packages which start at $350! So I wonder, is it worth it to get the expensive high quality photographs or should I just go to Walmart or JCP? I’m leaning towards doing the “Watch Me Grow” deal and then trying somewhere else for family portraits and such. Maybe the expensive place will have a special…

Getting coordinated!

Elliot grabbed one of the legs on his hanging octopus toy today! Logan said right after he did it he had a big grin on his face like he was surprised he actually got it. Gingy has been teaching him to suck on his hand and he is starting to find it on his own. He is getting more coordinated!

Slept Through the Night*!

*with only 3 interruptions for feeding and diapering yesterday night!

This is a significant improvement! The pediatrician was so pleased with our progress that he decided to suspended our weekly visits. Last week he told us something interesting. Apparently, babies are suppose to double their weight by six months. “Double!” I said. “That’s not fair! He started ahead!” Good grief. Thinking about lugging around a 19.5 lb six month old, not to mention all the breastfeeding to get to that point… I’m gonna be in great shape!

Speaking of size, he was 12lb 7oz at his last weight check. I guess we are making good progress towards his 6 month goal. He now wears size 2 diapers and fills out his 3-6 month clothes pretty well.

1 Month Birthday

About this time 1 month ago, Elliot was getting his first bath, which a nurse and Logan performed. I was zonked on pain meds. I remember when I came to, Logan was shirtless doing skin-to-skin with Elliot to keep him warm. It was sweet.

Elliot played with his new play mat with hanging things this afternoon. He was distinctly batting at a green seahorse and a blue whale!

Logan and I have been organizing closets to get space for Tom to move in tomorrow. Logan gave me a little break from Elliot to work on my stuff, which was appreciated. It made me enjoy playing with Elliot later that much more.

John Shanks sent us the following song, which was appropriate.
You Ruined Everything – Jonathan Coulton

And, just in case you thought I was kidding…

First milestones

Yesterday, the Dyers came over and Gam Gam and Logan mulched and weeded. Then they planted tomatoes, zucchini, and eggplant. Tom came over and started some pumpkins and watermelon from seeds. It looks like Tom will be staying with us this summer, so that will be fun!

We had another marathon feeding session from 6-11pm. Mommy did not use enough Gas-X throughout the day and I think he was using me as a giant pacifier (which as Logan said at the hospital “Two out of three people in the room have no problem with that!”) I was pretty sure I was out of milk at 11, but Elliot was wide awake and crying. It was time for a change of plans. Logan got some laundry started and we took Elliot for a soothing dryer ride. We also got him to take a pacifier for a bit. He was still fussy afterwards but consolable. Logan was playing with him and his Simon, The Hedgehog Rattle and Elliot tracked it! He even batted at it a few times! We tried again this morning and he could still do it, so it wasn’t a fluke. Hooray for development!
