Introducing… Elliot and Winston!

Born April 2012 and May 2015

Happy Father’s Day!

We made a quick trip to Gingy’s this weekend. Sarah, my Tullahoma friend with the 3 year old daughter, is starting a photography business. I have seen her photographs of her daughter on Facebook over the years and always admired her work. So, I jumped at the opportunity to have her take Elliot’s picture and we set up a session for this weekend.

We made the drive shortly after I got off of work on Friday. We met my parents and Marm at Timberloft’s in Manchester for dinner. There were a lot of little kids there of various ages, which entertained Elliot. The table next to us had a funny 10 month old who was eating with a spoon.

The next morning, Elliot got us up early at 5:30 so we would have plenty of time to get ready for his photo shoot. Then he went back to sleep at 8am. Sarah arrived while he was still asleep. I told her his crib was not particularly photogenic place, but she knowingly stated that she could make it photogenic. So I went up to check on him. Wouldn’t you know it, he was awake! Sarah kindly waited while I’ll nursed him and set up the studio in my parent’s living room for the shoot. Elliot was peacefully resting after his snack, so we got some resting pictures until he needed a diaper change.

Sarah also had a funny scale which provided setting for a few more pictures.

We got some family shots as well!

Per my request, she brought her daughter’s E.T. Doll. Elliot seemed to like him!

All in all, I’d say the session was a great success! She gently coaxed some great expressions out of him. It was fun to watch!

Uncle Art had his board exam that morning, but came up to visit Elliot afterwards.

That evening we went swimming at Craig and Suzanne’s again. Elliot had a bee to swim in, but it required him to hold his head up. So we just carried him.

Victoria warmed him up.

Robert played with Elliot.

Today is Logan’s First Father’s Day! Elliot’s mom dropped the ball and did not take into account handling time on his present… So he will get it Wednesday. I’m sure he’ll like it once he finally gets it! Elliot did find his feet today in celebration!

Logan and I got my dad some W. L. Weller’s Wheated Bourbon and Clarence a Titan’s shirt and a spot light. We had lunch of hamburgers with Nell and Mosley. Gingy held Elliot during the meal and he smiled and cooed at Nell the whole time!

We headed back to Knoxville. Elliot had 3 hours of napping and went 5 hours since his last meal. He actually woke up happy! We stopped at Lisa’s to give him a meal and Lisa had gotten Elliot and Logan Bengals jerseys!

To Logan: Elliot may turn out to be just like you… and I would be so proud! I love you!

To my dad: Thanks for being the dad who’ll turn the garage into a solar system to teach us about seasons, walk a fussy baby so his mom can get her nails done, and always be up for an impromptu jam session! You’re the greatest! Love you!

2 Month Check-up

Yesterday, Logan had court in the morning. Slappy, Linzy, and Gam Gam all took turns watching him throughout the day. Logan noticed that Gam Gam seems to be able to get Elliot to sleep so he studied her technique. She uses several blankets and wraps him up loosely. So we are trying that now. It seems to keep him asleep just as long as the velcro swaddle but he doesn’t wake up mad.

Logan bought Elliot a new Jungle James. He found one for sale at T. J. Maxx and couldn’t resist. This one has lights and sounds and a tummy time pillow!

I think his expression in this picture looks a lot like my baby pictures.

Elliot had his 2 month check up today with Dr. Dave. I managed to rush out of work a little early and meet them for the appointment. I was glad that I did! Elliot needed 3 shots today for routine vaccinations. I held him while the nurse stuck him and then I fed him shortly after, which made him practically forget what had happened! He has been pretty sore this evening though, so we gave him some Infant Tylenol drops. They seem to be working. He also has George Harrison Horse, which helps.

Lamps, Bottles, and Nasal Aspirators

Hooray! Gingy and Uncle Art found that lamp I wanted for Elliot! So cute! I went to 3 different Targets without success. Gingy did a search to find a store that still had one and there was one in Brentwood. Uncle Art picked it up!

We found some bottles from which Elliot will drink! The Tomme Tippy: Closer to Nature nipples are quite breast-like and Elliot would even drink from the bottle when I fed it to him! How ’bout that! Makes me feel better about going back to work.

The other day Elliot did something funny. We got a new nasal aspirator from the pediatrician that actually fit his nostrils. I was working on removing his boogers, which was rather upsetting for Elliot. Logan and I discovered that if we put him on his stomach he would let me suction more. However, this did not last long. The second time we tried putting him on his stomach he lifted his head and turned it towards the other side (which is still a lot of effort on his part). I followed him to the other side and he lifted his head again and turned it back! I chased him back and forth for a little while and eventually gave up. At least we got a good neck workout in.

Resident Research Day

I had my presentation this morning, which went pretty well. I was very nervous though. I don’t think I’ll win a prize or anything, but I’m glad I did it and even more glad that it is over. I told our department secretary that my goal was to get through the presentation without lapsing into baby talk and to not look like I just had a baby. She said I succeeded!

Logan took Elliot to the grocery store while I was away. He got fussy a couple of times but over all did ok. Logan gave him a bottle when they got home. He played with it instead of drinking it, but he didn’t get mad at it. I guess that is a step in the right direction. I was glad to see Elliot when I got home. I missed my baby boy!

In other news, we are getting a queen size bed, which will be nice for when Elliot occasionally joins us. Also, our five year anniversary is going to be the “computer anniversary.” Logan is building us our first totally new desktop computer in about 10 years, which coincidentally is about when we started dating. It should be able to run Diablo III, not that we have time for such things. I plan on primarily using it to store and edit video footage of Elliot!

1 Month Birthday

About this time 1 month ago, Elliot was getting his first bath, which a nurse and Logan performed. I was zonked on pain meds. I remember when I came to, Logan was shirtless doing skin-to-skin with Elliot to keep him warm. It was sweet.

Elliot played with his new play mat with hanging things this afternoon. He was distinctly batting at a green seahorse and a blue whale!

Logan and I have been organizing closets to get space for Tom to move in tomorrow. Logan gave me a little break from Elliot to work on my stuff, which was appreciated. It made me enjoy playing with Elliot later that much more.

John Shanks sent us the following song, which was appropriate.
You Ruined Everything – Jonathan Coulton

And, just in case you thought I was kidding…

28 Days Later…

Elliot is 4 weeks old today! We are heading back from a weekend at Gingy’s. Let me see if I can catch y’all up on the past few days…

Thursday we had Aunt Linzy’s graduation crawfish boil. Turns out, 20 lbs. of crawfish is a lot of crawfish. Elliot took his first dose of the Zantac that evening which he did not like. I don’t know how much of it he actually got down. He was pretty fussy that evening, but Gam Gam and Aunt Linzy took turns trying to console him while I learned how to eat a crawfish.

We had another rough night and then after Logan took care of some things in the morning we got on the road to Tullahoma. We stopped by the Food City pharmacy on the way to see if they could flavor Elliot’s nasty prescription. They said that the compound we too unstable to flavor. So, I called Elliot’s pediatrician and they suggested that we get the medicine flavored… We ended up stopping at Target and they were happy to add a grape flavor to the medicine.

We got to Tullahoma without incident. Well, I guess there was one blow out diaper. I also gave him a dose of the medicine while traveling which went a little better since he swallowed while he cried. Gingy and Grandpa were so glad to see him! They got him talking and doing all kinds of baby tricks. It was sweet! Gingy even helped me give Elliot a sink bath, which was cute. After the bath, Elliot demonstrated his excellent bladder pressure by peeing on Gingy’s bathroom door and floor.

That night Elliot woke up every 2 hrs to eat.

Logan and Gingy let me sleep in some the next morning. Gingy and Grandpa went to Uncle Art’s graduation and we stayed at home with Elliot. Logan went to Hastings that morning for free comic book day. Then the 3 of us went out to try to find some Mexican food for Cinco de Mayo. Not surprisingly, the Mexican restaurants were packed so we ate Subway.

We went for a walk to Great Gingy’s house. Elliot slept on the way there and back but got a bit fussy while there. Marm and I diapered him and I fed him. Marm came in to check on me and related a story about when her youngest was a baby, she and her husband and another couple went on a boating trip and she got left on the dock all day with the baby. She tries to keep the mother in mind after that experience, which I appreciated.

We came home and watched An Idiot Abroad marathon on the Science network. Later we watched the Kentucky Derby, which Elliot seemed to really like. He watched it live with Logan and again later that evening with Grandpa.

Uncle Art came to Tullahoma that evening after his graduation and got to hold Elliot for the first time since Elliot’s birth day. Art brought him a custom made onesie with Squirtle’s face and some pointy sunglasses to match!

Later that evening we were all watching TV and I realized that I was breastfeeding un-drapped in front of every male in my immediate family… Whatever…

Last night Elliot went 3 or more hours between each feeding!!! Logan went ahead and got up with him at 4:45 and let me sleep. That was nice.

That morning Elliot took a long nap on Uncle Art.

We had a graduation party for Art and a birthday party for Great Aunt Mary for lunch. Elliot wore a special outfit with turtles from Gam Gam. We had to turn Elliot upside down to get him into it which surprised him.

Mary showed us her special swaying technique which calmed her oldest when he was colicky. She also had Elliot perform some more baby tricks for us! Mary’s advice to us: “Do whatever it takes to survive these first few months!”

Victoria and Elliot!

We got on the road after Elliot had a couple of lunch breaks. I got Elliot to take a pacifier finally, which made me feel like Super Mom! We stopped on the way to visit a classics professor of Logan’s, Dr. Sutherland, who kindly gave us some neat baby and toddler toys! Now we are home unpacking and snacking.

Old enough to drink milk

Elliot is 3 weeks old today! Some observations:

1. Guess who is not allowed to carry Elliot anymore… Me. That’s right. Elliot is 10.8 lbs. according to the Wii Fit Baby Stats. Part of my discharge instructions included not lifting anything heavier than 10 lbs, which of course when the nurse told me that I looked at her like she had 3 heads ’cause there was no way I was going to follow that one. He ain’t heavy, he’s my baby.
2. It has been about 2 months, but I can finally get my wedding band on my finger. There is still an issue with getting it off, but I’ll take whatever victory I can get!
3. Elliot still gets the hiccoughs, especially after a good burp. It’s cute. He goes “Hup!” He used to get them while he was inside of me, which was how I knew he was head down. Either that or he had a twitchy foot.

Yesterday, we took Elliot to his Great Granny Dyer’s 86th birthday party at Great Aunt Cathy’s house. He was well behaved (i.e. sleeping) for most of the party and, despite my fears, did not get ripped in half by his well meaning but enthusiastic relatives. We put him in his froggy sweater from Gam Gam with the top unbuttoned since it was too tight for his neck. At least we got a picture.

Four generations of Dyers!

Then we took a quick drive to Target to try to get this Table Lamp but they were out. I still haven’t really been able to get Elliot to take a pacifier, so when he started crying on the drive there was little that I could do…

Cousin Bart came over for dinner and we had a pleasant time hanging out on our deck. We also got to talk to Uncle Art on the phone, who had a successful day of apartment hunting. Then, Elliot and I turned in early at about 9PM. Then we got up at 11 for food and diaper change. Then we got up at 2AM for a marathon 6 boob binge with just as many diaper changes. In fact, he was so awake at 3AM, daddy and I ended up watching the first half of Office Space while we distracted Elliot to give me some time to build my milk stores back up.

This morning Elliot soiled his nursery door. It was impressive! He was wide awake afterwards, so we did tummy time and played with his Gund My First Doctor Kit Playset.

Them’s the rules…

As it turns out, there are way more rules for being a parent than there were for being a kid. Yesterday we had a little celebration at Elliot’s Gam Gam’s house for his 2 week birthday. Logan’s parents cooked us some delicious Chilean Sea Bass and provided a small cake for Elliot, which we ate on his behalf. Later on, Logan made some tuna salad and crackers for a snack. At that point, I was concerned about eating 2 fish meals in a day, due to the stupid mercury risk. Logan looked up Chilean sea bass, and to our surprise, the FDA lists Chilean sea bass in its moderate/high risk category, where as a lactating female they recommend that I have no more than 1 serving a month. Usually the higher risk seafoods are predatory, like shark. The risk would have been higher to Elliot if I had been pregnant. Plus, grilling the fish apparently helps decrease the risk. So, we are in all likelihood safe, but it just makes me mad since I like seafood and it is otherwise healthy. Stupid pollution… Happy belated Earth Day…

Fortunately, the dietary restrictions are much more relaxed for lactation as opposed to pregnancy. For example, I can eat cold cuts again without having my sandwich toasted. I also can have a small amount of alcohol and a medium/rare steak! Still probably shouldn’t start smoking, but I wasn’t going to worry about that one…

Another issue is the sleeping surfaces. In December, I read Dr. Sear’s Attachment Parenting Book, which promoted a very baby centered style of parenting that actually sounded like fun to me. Basically the idea is to really study your child and learn their cues so that you can hypothetically deal with problems before they arise. Dr. Sear’s postulates that keeping a baby happy makes them more receptive to their environment so that they can learn. Not to mention, my sanity is better preserved when Elliot is not crying. Obviously, nothing is perfect, and as Grandpa says, “Sometimes babies cry.”

Anyways, the attachment parenting philosophy recommends things like baby wearing and bed sharing, which sounded pretty convenient to me as a mother who is currently exclusively breastfeeding. However, recommendations for preventing SIDS advise against bed sharing. Plus, there is the risk of squishing the baby. So our solution: the Arm’s Reach Co-Sleeper Bassinet, a bassinet that attaches to the side of our bed for easy Elliot access throughout the night. The only problem, Elliot much prefers our bed, even after I wrote him a song the basically went “We like the bassinet so much!” Our bed is much softer that the extra firm surface in the bassinet, which is another preventing SIDS recommendation. So when I feed him I end up letting him rest on my chest for a few minutes afterwards. Then, I move him to my side in the bed for a few more minutes to let him get good and asleep, and then to the bassinet. Sometimes the move to the bassinet wakes him up and I have to start the whole process over. And in the wee hours of the morning, sometimes I fall asleep before we get through all of the steps. So far I have yet to squish him, but every time I wake up with him beside me I feel a pang of guilt. Fortunately, Elliot is so big and can already move his head so well that I have a little less fear for his survival in our bedroom, but still as a new parent, any advise I hear I am keen to do everything I can to follow, especially when they throw in the phrase “infant mortality.” New parents are such chumps… At least, I finally figured out how to get him to sleep on his back.

I could also discuss the craziness of “nipple confusion” from giving a pacifier too early or the fact that we are not suppose to use baby sunscreen on him until he is 4-6 months of age (which will put us to September for going out in the sun), but I think that I have already exceeded my word limit for the day.

Another post courtesy of Boppy

I’ve been getting some positive feedback on this blog, so I’ll try to keep posting. I’m glad everyone is enjoying our little misadventures. And while I do make fun of my little Elliot some, rest assured that I love him dearly and would do anything for him. It is just a matter of figuring out what that is sometimes… I had a realization the other day when Logan and I were at Market Square. He had Elliot in the BABYBJÖRN Baby Carrier and we were about to cross the street when a car came up and did not appear to be slowing down. It did, but I noticed afterwards that I was ready to jump in front of that car to keep my Elliot safe. Being a parent is an interesting experience…

Also, I would like to take this moment to put in a plug for the Boppy Pillow. When your four recorded feedings from yesterday afternoon/evening average 74 minutes apiece (seriously, my app recorded that!), it’s nice to have a hand free. I would never get anything done without it!

Yesterday evening Aunt Cathy and Tio Carlos came to visit Elliot. Unfortunately, when they arrived, he was feeding and when he was done he was fussy. I went to change him, but there was no need. So, I snuck him downstairs while Logan showed off the new entertainment center. The washer was running with the load of a thousand garments, so I sat Elliot on it. Would you know it? It actually worked. Elliot was suddenly in a presentable mood! I brought him back up to his great relatives, who proceeded to argue over who got to hold him. Elliot then peed on Aunt Cathy such that it made her look like she peed herself. I apologized and took him for a change, but Elliot and I shared a quick giggle at the changing table (Sorry Cathy! Thanks for being a good sport!)

When we returned Carlos asked me a question, part of which must have gotten lost in translation. I think he meant, “How are you handling being a mother?” but he said, “How are you at being a mother?” to which I replied, “Well, he’s not dead yet!”

20120421-105954.jpg

The evening was another fussy/nursey one. Logan tried the dryer thing again, which elicited a burp, and I ate the world’s fastest dinner to accommodate Elliot’s demanding feeding schedule. Then, he went to sleep at about 10:30 and only woke up for light feedings and diaper changes. The Huggies were an issue again. Overnight casualties: 4 baby pajamas, one Boppy cover, the fitted sheet, and my pajamas. I’ll never bother doing laundry again (unless Elliot needs to be soothed)!

In October 2011, I posted the following sonogram and comment on Facebook.

20120421-104828.jpg

“Another look at our future third player! Some interesting things about this ultrasound: The baby was moving its mouth the whole time, like it was talking to us! We have a future jabber mouth 😀 Also, it was 8AM and the baby put its hand up against its head like it wanted to go back to sleep. Not a morning baby? I suppose we will find out.”

Anyways, this morning at 8AM, Elliot would only wake to drink for about 6 minutes from my right boob. By 10AM, the left was getting so full and he wouldn’t wake up to help me out, so I had to pump so as to avoid getting engorged, again. When my milk first came in, I got extremely engorged but couldn’t feel it thanks to the awesome painkillers. Logan and I figured it out when Elliot couldn’t latch on to my rock hard boobs. Anyways, now I am mostly off the meds and would prefer to avoid super painful fullness. Of course, at 11AM Elliot finally decided he was hungry.
